Construction worker suffers head injury on scissor lift

A 43-year-old man suffered a serious head injury while working on renovations in the stands at an auto racetrack recently.  The construction worker’s accident happened when his head was caught between a scissor lift he was operating and a steel beam.

Co-workers came to the aid of the man caught in the machinery and freed him.  Once emergency personnel arrived, the construction worker was immobilized and taken to a nearby hospital.  His condition was listed as serious but stable.

The track, the Daytona International Speedway, is in the middle of a major upgrade of its grandstands; a project that is scheduled to be completed in 2016.  The pace of construction has increased lately, after the conclusion of two major events at the track.  The grandstand project employs over 300 construction workers.

The design-build firm in charge of the renovations said the injured worker is recovering well from the accident and restated its commitment to safety.  The company also cited a renewed commitment to employee training, which could mean that operator error may have caused the most recent accident.  It is also possible that defective machinery or inadequate safety equipment contributed to the incident.

Construction workers in Illinois and any state are particularly susceptible to workplace accidents.  When workplace injuries lead to lost work time and potential claims for workers’ compensation, injured people may benefit from the assistance of an attorney with experience in construction accidents to help them receive appropriate compensation. In addition to claims for workers’ compensation benefits, third-party negligence claims may also be appropriate. It can be very helpful to have the support of an attorney who understands what damages a person may be entitled to.
