2 dead, 1 injured after explosion at recycling facility

At 6:30 a.m. on August 25, the Total Metal Recycling (TMR) plant located on Missouri Avenue in Granite City, Illinois, which engages in the recycling of military materials, lost two workers after a mortar exploded. One other worker was injured in the explosion, and he was transported to a hospital in St. Louis.

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit truck was sent to the scene of the explosion by Scott Air Force Base, and Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents were investigating the incident along with the bomb squad from St. Louis city police. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration also dispatched an investigator to the plant. OSHA cited the facility in 2011 and 2012 for violations according to the news source. On the day of the incident, Granite City's police chief reported that it was an accident and not a homicide.

The news source reported that a former employee of the plant claimed that his 24-year-old brother was one of the deceased. He told the source that working at the plant is unsafe since numerous items being recycled there are dangerous. A maintenance worker at the plant told the news source that his 46-year-old brother was the other person who was killed.

When employees suffer workplace injuries , they have the right to file workers' compensation claims. When someone dies while performing his or job duties, the family of that person could be entitled to benefits through workers' compensation. Those benefits could help with the victim's final expenses and also supplement the family's household income if it depended on the decedent's wages for financial stability. An attorney who practices employment law could help a family in that circumstance with drafting and filing the necessary paperwork.
