4 hurt in Illinois bakery garage explosion

A propane explosion in the truck maintenance garage of an Oak Park bakery injured four workers on Nov. 11. The explosion sparked an extra-alarm fire that destroyed the building.

According to a representative of the Oak Park Fire Department, the explosion happened around 2:30 p.m. at Turano Baking Company when a worker attempted to change a propane tank in a bread delivery truck. The worker believed the tank was empty, but propane shot from the tank and was ignited by the building's furnace. The fire then caused other propane tanks in the garage to explode, and the building partially collapsed.

One worker suffered severe burns and was transported to Loyola University Medical Center. Three other workers were taken to Oak Park Hospital where they were treated and released. Several delivery trucks parked near the garage were incinerated, but Turano's main bakery building was undamaged. As a precaution, the bakery was shut down for a few hours after the incident.

Employers in Illinois are required to have workers' compensation insurance. In the event of any workplace injuries, this insurance can help pay for medical expenses such as hospital visits, surgery, physical therapy and medication. Workers' compensation can also provide coverage for lost wages, various disability benefits, vocational rehabilitation and death benefits for eligible surviving family members.

Someone who has been injured in a workplace accident may want to seek the guidance of an attorney when they file a workers' compensation claim. A lawyer could help an injured worker properly prepare the documents and evidence needed to establish their insurance claim and increase the chance of benefits approval.
