West Lawn building collapse kills 1, injures 3

According to reports made by officials with the Chicago Police Department, a building located at 63rd and Keeler collapsed on Nov. 1, killing one construction worker and injuring three others. According to police, the men were apparently replacing the building's facade and had removed a small portion of it when the remainder of it crumbled down upon them.

Rubble and debris covered the sidewalk in front of the commercial building. Officers say the men were apparently working to get the space ready in advance of a new commercial tenant's move-in date. Following the collapse, two of the men were critically injured and were transported to Christ Hospital for treatment, where one died of his injuries. The other remains there and is reportedly in serious condition. Another injured worker was transported to Holy Cross Hospital, where his injuries were classified as minor. The fourth injured man refused treatment for the injuries he suffered in the accident.

Along with the police, officials with the city's Building Department also responded to investigate the scene of the accident. They reportedly issued violations because the proper permits were not obtained in order for the construction company to perform work on the building prior to the incident.

People who are injured on the job in a worksite accident may be able to be compensated for their losses related to their injuries by filing a workers' compensation claim with their employer. Illinois law mandates that companies participate in the state's workers' compensation program in order to compensate workers for on-the-job injuries they might suffer. Employers, including construction companies, owe a duty of care to their employees to minimize work hazards. Those who are injured or the families of workers who are killed in workplace accidents may be able to recover lost current and future income, medical expenses and other associated costs.
