Illinois construction worker injured in bridge crane accident

A construction accident on the I-90 bridge over the Fox River has left one man critically injured. The 51-year-old man was reportedly working on the I-90 reconstruction project at the time of the accident.

According to fire officials, the victim was working on a barge on the river when the accident occurred. A crane under the bridge allegedly snapped, and one of the broken components fell on the worker, pinning him underneath. The local fire department was called to the work site around 9:30 a.m., and rescue workers were able to reach the man via the barge's land bridge. Rescue workers were able to free the injured worker and get him onto land and into an ambulance in less than 30 minutes. He was subsequently rushed to a nearby hospital where he was listed in critical condition. He was later airlifted to another hospital in Park Ridge for further treatment.

The $95 million reconstruction project commenced earlier in the year. According to news reports, safety officers working on the project met with the local fire department prior to the bridge project's start to go over rescue plans in case of an on-the-job emergency. Investigators are still trying to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Construction equipment can fail for various reasons. In this case, the crane could have a design or manufacturing defect, or the employer may have failed to properly maintain the crane or overused it beyond its capacity. With accidents like these, there could be multiple liable parties. An attorney who has experience with workers' compensation accidents may be able to help the injured worker file a workers' compensation claim and identify any third-party entities that may have been responsible for the accident.
