Companies say workers' compensation premiums too high in IL

It may be easy to assume that workers' compensation benefits are automatic and immediate after a workplace injury or illness. However, this is not often the case. Many workers' compensation claims in Illinois are denied or disputed, making it necessary for employees to file appeals and wait a long time to receive compensation. Also, many companies and business advocates in the state say that workers' compensation premiums are unaffordable, which may further complicate a worker's attempts to have a claim approved.

The reason insurance rates are so high, state company owners, is that injured workers in Illinois find it easy to get paid for a workplace injury. However, those representing injured workers disagree. They say that most workers' compensation claims are disputed, at least in part, and that employees who are recovering at home from serious injuries may go weeks or months without receiving any form of payment to cover their lost wages.

Fraudulent claims are part of the problem, says an official from an Illinois heavy duty equipment company. The company reportedly deals with two to three frivolous workers' compensation claims each month. Because workers' compensation costs in Illinois are so high, the company is moving its operations to Indiana.

Many are calling for workers' compensation reform in Illinois to deal with the problem. It remains to be seen if a solution can be found that provides relief to both injured workers and companies. The problem also illustrates the need for a workers' compensation attorney to assist workers who are legitimately injured in getting the compensation they need to help them recover.
