What dangers do power tools pose to you on a worksite?

If you are a construction worker, you probably use power tools on a daily basis. Because their use is so commonplace, it may be easy to forget that such tools can be quite hazardous in some circumstances. Being aware of the inherent dangers power tools pose may prevent you or a coworker from becoming seriously injured.

According to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, power tools should be fitted with guards and safety switches. Electric saws, including table saws, circular saws, and chain saws pose a grave threat to your fingers, so vigilance while using them is vital. It is also important that you not try to change the parts on a tool while the power source is still hooked up. You should especially be cautious when operating corded tools, as the cords pose both a tripping hazard and an electrical hazard.

If you use pneumatic tools, which are powered by compressed air, you are at risk for injury in several ways. Pneumatic tools like jackhammers are often very heavy and require a lot of strain to use. If you become tired, the jackhammer can slip or fall, causing serious injury. Pneumatic tools are also very loud and can cause severe hearing damage if you do not use some kind of ear protection while using them.

Power tools are vastly safer when you follow a few basic safety rules.  Tools should be properly maintained and you should never use a tool for a job it was not intended for. Always wear the proper safety protection equipment and inspect your tools regularly for damage.
