St. Charles boy dies in school parking lot

Because we are so familiar with cars and trucks, we often discount the threat they pose. If someone described to you an object that weighed 3,000 to 6,000 pounds and that can move at speeds upwards of 120 miles per hour, you would probably think it was a very dangerous object. Unless it was the car or SUV that sits in your driveway.

For the average motorist in the Chicagoland area, you probably never give a second thought to how dangerous a vehicle can be, in spite of being around them every day. Or perhaps we should say, because we are around them every day. We spend so much time in and around our personal vehicles that we have a difficult time thinking of them as dangerous.

Teens have an especially difficult time. They have likely never known a time without a car or truck in the garage and a highlight for many teens is when they finally obtain a driver's license. They can drive to school, extracurricular activities, friends' homes and jobs.

Sadly, a group of teens messing around in a school parking lot in Aurora led to one of the boy's death. They were just horsing around, but not only did someone get hurt, but someone died. A boy, riding on a running board on an SUV, fell and apparently struck his head. He was taken by helicopter to a hospital but died of his injuries.

Riding on the outside of any motor vehicle is prohibited by law. Doing so is also negligent. The fault will likely be determined by a lawsuit. There will be much sadness and grief. None of it will bring a teen back, but for anyone reading this or any of the news reports, we can all hope that they will view with a little more caution those overly-familiar vehicles they ride in every day and apply that caution towards preventing this type of needless death.
