Is your RV ready to ride this holiday weekend?

If your 4th of July celebration includes an excursion in an RV, safety should be first and foremost in your mind. The RV lifestyle is a great deal of fun for families, retirees and those seeking to explore the country from the comforts of their own motor homes, but there can definitely be safety risks involved.

For instance, overloading an RV is a major contributor toward accidents. Unequal weight distribution and too heavy a payload affect the maneuverability of the rigs, causing steering difficulties and making it take longer to brake. An overloaded RV also strains the mechanical parts and leaves tires prone to blowouts.

Make sure that all your gear and passenger weight limits are below the established limitations set by the manufacturer. Look for its gross vehicle weight rating, which is the max amount the RV can haul without compromising safety.

Once loaded, head to the public weigh station to make sure that you are within the limits. It's impossible to "eyeball" a load and make an accurate determination. The fee is minimal and well worth it for safety's sake. If you are over limit, start tossing.

Remember that there's an art to packing, too. Heavy items are stored down and to the front, with lighter items above. Secure heavy things so if jostled they can't damage equipment inside the RV. Balance loads as equally as possible on both sides to reduce wobble, sway and swing.

Despite all your precautions, you still might find yourself injured in a collision with another motorist. If you get injured in an RV accident and another driver is at-fault, you can file a civil suit in the Illinois courts.
