Missing Carthage boater drowned, coroner determines

According to the coroner of Adams County in Illinois, a man who went missing after being involved in an accident while fishing from a boat on a river died from drowning.

The accident occurred late last month while the Carthage man and a friend, both 31, were fishing one afternoon near the Keokuk Dam spillway. The anchors on their boat failed, and the two couldn't get the boat motor started again.

As the boat was carried by the current over the dam, one of the men dove out of the boat, disappearing under the water's surface. The other man was rescued by first responders with the fire department from Keokuk, Iowa.

Search-and-rescue efforts were initiated immediately along both the south and north shores of the river near the Keokuk-Hamilton bridge. Scores of volunteers from Iowa and Illinois assisted with the search, both on the water's surface and in the depths through use of sonar equipment. Searchers with the Quincy Volunteer Emergency Corps located the missing fisherman's body just south of the Canton lock and dam by Long Island on the Monday following the Friday accident. He was not wearing a life preserver.

Local residents discovered the unoccupied fishing vessel downstream in Alexandria, Mo., where it had drifted, and pulled it ashore. The coroner conducted the autopsy the following day in Bloomington.

Summer always increases the risk of boating accidents because there are so many more people out on the waterways. Many of them may not be properly trained in the safe operation of fishing or recreational boats, further heightening the chance of mishaps occurring.

If you were injured on the water due to another person's negligence or errors, you may be able to recover financial compensation for your injuries by filing a claim for damages.
