Are you planning an August road trip on your motorcycle?

August is a great time to head out on the highway for a summer motorcycle road trip, as there is little chance of the weather turning too cool for comfortable riding in most areas of the United States. But the best road trips take a good deal of planning to prepare for predicaments riders may encounter out on the highway.

You will require different provisions for road trips spent at campsites along the way than you would for nights spent at motels dotting the nation's landscape. Gauging the weather and fortitude of your riding partners is also important when planning your nightly accommodations.

With GPS maps enabled on every smartphone, it's quite easy to plot a general route for each day. If you are more of a maverick type, you can use your device to scope out lodging as you make your way along the trip.

Anyone who has ever road-tripped on a two-wheeler knows that there is an art to packing a motorcycle — and the theme is minimalism. Yet with the right skills, you can include all necessities packed in the safest manner, such as:

-- Avoiding balance and handling problems by packing the heaviest cargo to the rear of the seat.

-- Refer to the manufacturer's specifications for the max amount of weight able to be carried by your motorcycle, and include your (actual) weight as well as the weight of any passengers.

-- Always pack bags with items layered heavy to light.

-- Don't leave home without waterproof riding gear.

-- Vital items include cellphones with chargers, first aid kit, tire repair kit and basic tools, owner's manual, filled water bottles, snacks and emergency flares.

If your road trip goes off course and you wind up injured in a motorcycle accident, know that you have rights. Learn the options that are available to you after an accident with an at-fault motorist.
