Stay safe on the roads this Halloween

Halloween is a dangerous time when higher numbers of drivers are impaired by alcohol. Statistics from the four years between 2007 and 2011 determined that there were 172 deaths — 52 percent of all the fatalities nationwide — on Halloween in collisions involving drunk drivers.

Those most at risk of getting in a wreck due to "buzzed" driving were males from 21 to 34. They comprised nearly half of the total of drunken drivers who died in accidents in the United States over the 2011 Halloween.

The following tips can lead to a safer Halloween experience for all.

-- Designate a sober driver.

-- Take keys from impaired drivers and see that they have safe alternative ways home.

-- Impaired drivers should call Uber, a taxi or a sober friend for a ride.

-- Using public transportation is another option when imbibing.

-- Don't attempt to walk when impaired; that's dangerous as well.

-- Some communities offer sober ride programs around major holidays. Check this out in your area.

-- Report suspected drunk drivers to the police.

If you get into an accident with a drunk driver on Halloween, you can pursue compensation for your injuries and damages by filing a claim for damages. If the driver's insurance company doesn't want to pay up, you may have to take it a step further and file a civil suit for personal injuries with the Illinois courts.

It may be helpful to retain a Chicago personal injury attorney to handle your claim and address any questions you may have about the claims process.
