Motorcycle fatalities are on the rise, but injuries declining

The number of motorcycle accident fatalities has been on the increase. When looking at the figures from 2014 and 2015, there was an increase of 8.3 percent. Interestingly, the number of motorcyclists injured in crashes decreased by 4.3 percent during that same time period.

The fatality rate for motorcyclists is much greater than that of passenger vehicle occupants. If you consider the number of registered motorcycles and passenger vehicles compared to the number of fatalities associated with each type, motorcyclists died at a rate of six times greater than passenger vehicle occupants in 2014.

Another interesting fact to note about fatal motorcycle crashes is that motorcyclists who are over 40 years old are much more likely to be killed. In fact, these motorcyclists account for more than half of all fatalities. These older bikers are also more likely to suffer from serious injuries than their younger counterparts.

Sadly, the number of motorcyclists who have a blood alcohol concentration at or above the legal limit of .08 percent is on the rise. When comparing 2013 and 2014, there was a 2 percent increase from 27 percent to 29 percent of bikers who were killed in accidents who had a BAC at or above that level. The majority of bikers who fell into this category were 35 to 39 years old, but bikers who were 40 to 45 came in a close second. Those two groups together accounted for a whopping 83 percent of all alcohol-related motorcycle accident fatalities.

All of these statistics show how important it is for bikers to drive sober. Other drivers should do the same. If you were injured in a motorcycle accident or lost a loved one in a motorcycle crash, you can look into seeking compensation for the effects of the accident.
