In May 2013, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White spoke about bicycle safety at an event at St. Margaret Mary School on Chicago’s far north side. He reminded his audience of the duties of drivers and bicyclists alike for prevention of bike accidents. Commemorating May as Bicycle Safety Month, he said, “As the weather continues to get warmer, more bicyclists will be sharing the roads with cars. In order to make our roads safe for everyone, as bike riders we should follow the same rules of the road as motorists and as drivers we should keep our eyes out for bicyclists.” (Source: press release from Jesse White’s office).

How Bicycle Accident Cases Arise

Mr. White’s admonition about bicycle safety underscores the hazards of bicycling. Bicycle accidents occur throughout Chicago and elsewhere in our state under a variety of circumstances, including:

  • Recreational bicycling by children
  • Bicycling as transportation in and around college campuses such as Northwestern University, Loyola University and DePaul University
  • Bicycling by adults as exercise or for pleasure
  • Bicycling for commuting
  • Bicycle messenger services
  • Divvy bicycle rental use, a program of the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT)

An injured bicyclist often faces a long road ahead. Serious and catastrophic injuries are common. Someone riding a bicycle has little or no protection from blunt force injuries. A helmet may help, but a human body is no match for a car or truck in a collision.
